Being treated rudely at work can have an unpleasant impact, and unfortunately, it’s an all-too-common occurrence if you work in health care.

Shouting at someone, swearing, aggressive behaviour, belittling someone, sending emails while in meetings, talking over others, being difficult over the phone, rolling eyes or tutting at someone all has an impact.

When someone is rude to us, it reduces our ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks and conscious thoughts. For example, on a good day, we can actively juggle many things, such as remembering to go shopping or an important birthday - but this also Ies the tasks we carry out for our patients.

When we condone rudeness in our teams, we accept poorer outcomes for our patients. Good teams perform better and this in turn will lead to better outcomes

During this event, Dr. Chris Turner, a consultant in emergency medicine in Coventry and co-founder of Civility Saves Lives will unpack the far-reaching impact that rudeness at work can have and how to respond to it.
