Leading change in policy – how to use your voice to influence nursing, equity, health strategy and politics

15 May 2023, 17:45 - 18:30

  • Syndicate 1, Ground Floor, The Brighton Centre, King's Road, Brighton, BN1 2GR
Hosted by: RCN Nurses in Management and Leadership Forum

Collaboration: Nursing in Justice and Forensic Health Care Forum; RCN London and the Policy team

Leading policy change is everyone’s role but are preparation and opportunity really the most important elements in influencing a successful outcome? In 2022 Congress voted overwhelmingly to lobby the Government to protect the title ‘Nurse’. Many steps preceded this vote and legislation has yet to be changed.

Sharing the experiences of the ‘Protect the Title’ journey so far shows how a commitment to improving patient safety and using our collective voice and leadership can help us turn an issue into a policy change by gathering evidence, building allies and choosing the right tactics. Tomorrow’s change could be led by you.

Attendees will learn how to:

  • explain the policy and political process that supports the effective use of the nursing voice.
  • demonstrate how the collective action of nurses and the building of allies are essential to nurses’ leading policy change locally or nationally.
  • use self-reflection on how to engage and/or lead a change in policy.

This is relevant to all delegates.
