Specialists versus generalists: Getting the balance right for the nursing workforce

13 May 2018, 18:45 - 19:30

  • Meeting Room 1B, Belfast Waterfront, 2 Lanyon Place, Belfast, BT1 3WH
  • Free
  • Hosted by: RCN Foundation with RCN Fellows
In an uncertain world of the increasingly complex needs of patients and communities, we need to redesign the workforce to promote flexibility, transferable skills and better predictability of outcomes.

Would a generalist who knows something about a lot of subjects be preferred to a specialist who has special knowledge and skill relating to a particular job/subject specialism?

Clients are likely to have multiple co-morbidities therefore good understanding of a wide selection of topics can be an advantage. The health sector has no shortage of new ideas but what is the right balance between specialist and generalist orientation for the nursing workforce? What are the views of our front line, patient facing staff?

This event will explore all of these issues with an expert panel of speakers.

The event will be chaired by Robert Sowney FRCN – Chair of RCN Foundation.

The expert panel of speakers will include:
Professor Tony Butterworth CBE FRCN – Vice-Chair of RCN Foundation
Professor Jean White CBE – Chief Nursing Officer for Wales and Nurse Director of NHS Wales
Louise Skelly – Head of Operations at Patient and Client Council
