Nursing heritage in the North West
Nursing history is all around us. We need to note it, record and preserve it and ensure it is remembered. Our heritage map celebrates the rich nursing heritage of the North West.
The North West region is home to several well-known children’s hospitals including Alder Hey in Liverpool, which celebrated its centenary in 2014. It also played a significant role in the development of community nursing with the establishment of the first district nursing service in Liverpool in the late 1850s, shortly followed by the beginnings of health visiting in Manchester.
Personal stories are recorded everywhere; including on the site of the old Salford Royal Hospital which honours the names of the 14 nurses who died in a World World Two bombing attack.
