Time to Sew
10 Sep 2020, 17:00 - 18:00
Choose event information:
Take a break with fellow RCN members to try your hand at embroidery.
In this one-hour session, Justina will introduce you to the art of embroidery through three simple stitches; the spiders web wheel, the single chain stitch, and a french knot. By the end of the session you will have the tools to stitch your own embroidered flower arrangement.
All abilities are welcome to attend, but a basic understanding of using a needle and thread will help you get the most out of the session.
Materials:
You will need a few simple items. If you would like to purchase anything before the session, Hobbycraft will have everything you need in store or online. See some links below for ordering online. And do ask family and friends before you start buying. You’ll be surprised what people have lurking about in a cupboard.
-
Needles: With a large eye and sharp point e.g. tapestry needles, such as these or these.
-
A bamboo embroidery hoop: 7" 8" or 9" such as one of these. Bear in mind some need a flat head screwdriver to tighten them. Justina will begin the session with how to put your fabric on your hoop, so you do not need to prep this.
-
Embroidery threads / skeins: 4 colours in total, one should be green for the leaves plus your choice of colours for the flowers. Anchor or DMC brands are good, such as these (We would not recommend cheaper ones!)
-
Linen or medium weight calico: Plain, light colour. You can purchase material from many places online. You just need a fat quarter or half a meter if it works out cheaper. You can also reuse some old material, such as an old linen skirt, trousers or a napkin or tea towel. Just make sure the fabric is 2-3” larger than your hoop and has a low thread count (i.e. not your Egyptian cotton pillowcase!)
-
A sharp pair of scissors: Paper blunts scissors, so check that yours are sharp enough for cutting fabric.
-
A 5 pence piece or one pence piece: All will be revealed!
-
Pad of paper: If you would like to take notes.
-
A pencil.
Once you have signed up, we will send out a 'how to' pdf before the session, which you can consult beforehand and use during the session to help you.
