2020 is shaping up to be a busy year for the region as we celebrate the Year of the Nurse

Estephanie Dunn 11 Mar 2020

We have hit the ground running and have already held our first Board meeting and branch meetings of the year.

After a tremendous year of campaigning for the Staffing for Safe and Effective Care campaign, we are moving into the second phase. You all provided magnificent support during the first phase holding awareness events across the region and urging your friends and family to sign the petition which garnered more than 100,000 signatures before being presented to Downing Street.

Members of the North West collaborative, rep Maggy Heaton, student Sam Turner, member Joe O’Grady and RCN North West Operational Manager Paul Wood recently attended a planning workshop in HQ and will take the messages back to our local membership.

We are already planning the activity for the next phase of the campaign to maintain the momentum we have already gathered.  This is a long-term campaign and one in which we need to keep at the forefront of all that we do.  Lobbying our local MPs will be a key activity for example and we’re setting up meetings with them across the region which all members can attend. Keep an eye on our social media pages and website for details.

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Caribbean and African Health Network Greater Manchester's collaborative event. Timed to coincide with International Women's Day 2020, the event explored what improvements can and must be made to maternity care for Black women. It was an inspiring and informative event, including a keynote speech from Chief Midwifery Officer for England Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent. As we continue to strive for equality in every respect, read more about why I believe healthcare is leading the way in the fight for gender equality in my IWD blog here.

2020 promises to be another exciting year, though clearly one not without its challenges. It is the end of an era and the start of a new chapter for our regional staff team as we have recently moved offices to Bark Street in Bolton after 25 years in our former office. We hope to see many of you there and at our events soon.
