But we know this is nothing new, nursing staff do this all the time, no matter the crisis.
The recent announcement by the government that they would award a pay rise for staff in other public sectors left our nursing staff feeling undervalued and with more questions than answers.
While NHS pay is not due to be reviewed until March 2021, the RCN has asked the government to bring discussions forward and is working hard to ensure our members get the pay they deserve.
In order to inform our members around the progress we’re making, the RCN is running a series of webinars on pay and offering members the opportunity to ask questions on that or any other subject.
Last week here in the South West, we ran three online sessions for a variety of audiences: our representatives; our Board members and branch executives; and a further session for all our members. The latter was well received by those who attended and the event gave us a platform to engage with our members and respond directly to questions.
I was joined by our Council member Geoffrey Walker, our Board Chair Jeanette Jones, our Trade Union Committee member Jeni Watts, and our Nursing Support Worker Committee member Lyndsay Cardwell, who all answered questions from members on pay and other issues.
We know that due to work patterns not everyone is able to attend these sessions in person so we will be recording them for you – and you can pose your questions by email at tony.aspinall@rcn.org.uk.
You can view the last meeting here.
We will continue to run lunchtime sessions fortnightly and would love you to join us.
Our next one, aimed at members who are nursing support workers, will again focus on pay and takes place on Friday 4 February at 12 noon.
Please join us and get involved.
