Talking to our members

Dame Donna Kinnair 7 Aug 2020 Chief Executive and General Secretary

Dame Donna Kinnair reflects on the RCN’s AGM and our work to secure fair pay for nursing.

Yesterday many of our members joined us for the RCN’s first online AGM.

The AGM is an opportunity to reflect on what the RCN has achieved over the past year and for members to ask questions about the running of the College, trade union matters and issues of a professional nature.

As you can imagine, the issue of fair pay came up several times.

We shared an updated briefing with members yesterday on the latest news and how the RCN, led by our Council and Trade Union Committee, is working hard to ensure that colleagues from other unions understand our position on a fair pay rise for nursing.

Our position will reflect the real value of nursing – one which was highlighted during the Covid-19 pandemic, but is ever-present and year-round.

As you know, only governments in the UK have the power to set the timetable and the money they choose to spend when it comes to NHS pay negotiations.

But the greater the pressure they feel from you as members, and our supportive public, then the better chance we have of a significant and early pay award.

We expect that governments in the UK will confirm which route they will use to set pay in the autumn – and we are ready for all of them.

This means that by September we need to have concluded our early and internal discussions with members and be ready to submit evidence to the PRB or to participate in negotiations.

We will also mount a public campaign and it is critical that our members are active.

We will need every one of our members to get involved in the campaign so do please check your details so we can contact you about how to get involved.

And until then, I am committed to keep members informed as discussions progress so please do attend one of our upcoming webinars and keep an eye on our website to stay updated.

Finally, many members will be involved in pay demonstrations this weekend. While these are not RCN-led events, of course I support anyone who wants to make their voice heard and urge them to abide by COVID-19 restrictions while during so.

Together we will secure fair pay for nursing.
